امروزه رویکرد صنایع نسل چهارم و مجهز شدن کارخانه ها به سیستم‏ های فیزیکی سایبری هوشمند و سیستم‏ های پردازشی و به تبع آن ارتباط مستقیم تجهیزات با یکدیگر، سبب تحول عظیمی در اتوماسیون صنعتی گشته است. صنعت نسل چهارم در واقع یک تغییر پارادایم از منطق فرآیند تولید سنتی به مدرن است که به‌واسطه‌ی پیشرفت‌های تکنولوژی امکان‌پذیر می‌شود.  صنعت نسل چهار با متصل کردن همزمان افراد، اشیاء، سیستم‌ها و قابلیت‌های آنها، پویایی، بهینه‌سازی لحظه‌ای و ساماندهی شبکه‌های ارزش را امکان‌پذیر می‌سازد.
